The Year 1 Phonics Screening Check is a government statutory requirement for children in Year 1. It is a quick and easy check of a child’s phonics knowledge and takes place in the summer term. After the check we inform parents if their child has met or not met the expected level. The check is a statutory requirement for all children in Year 1 and takes place each year in the summer term.

Children who did not take the check in Year 1, or who did not meet the expected standards, take the check again at the end of Year 2. Children who did not meet the expected standards will continue to learn phonics with his/her classmates on a daily basis. Depending on their learning needs, they may be given additional resources or input. In addition to the daily phonics session in class children may take part in additional catch up sessions throughout the week.

During the transition meetings with the Year 3 teachers from the Junior School our staff will inform them of the children who did not meet the expected standards in the Year 2 phonics retake. Again, parents will be informed of all of the results.
