Physical Education (PE) at Perryfields Infant School
Intent
Our aim is for the children to leave the school with all the skills and knowledge outlined in the National Curriculum for PE.
The skills to be taught in Key Stage 1 have been plotted into 5 blocks of learning for Year 1 and Year 2 (one block is repeated twice in the context of different ball skills/ games). Each year group builds on skills learnt from the previous year group and each block gives the opportunity for the children to apply and practise skills which they have already learnt, as well as making cross curriculum links if and where possible. The order of the blocks taught depends on whether any specialist teacher is available for a year group for each half term and whether the children have any intra/inter-school competitions.
In EYFS the children learn the basic gross motor skills which will enable them to move and make the right decisions once they have moved into Year 1. Fine motor control is also linked to gross motor control for the children’s assessment of learning.
EYFS
Once the children are settled in school full-time, they will have 2 PE sessions on a weekly basis from different key areas.
The order of skills and knowledge:
These are set out in the EYFS curriculum overview.
How and when we assess:
We make on-going observations and assessments, which are saved on the Early Years Data Spreadsheet termly, leading to an end of year assessment determining whether the children have met the Early Learning Goals.
By the end of the year
We expect children to be able to acquire the skills listed in the Early Years Framework. We also teach beyond those skills and expect the following:
- In Gymnastics – To move with some awareness of space, hold a balance and perform an egg or pencil rolls and jump off equipment safety.
- In Dance – To remember a series of actions, to perform the actions to music.
- In Athletics – To throw with some accuracy, to take off and land safely, to be able to run a short distance with some speed or pace.
- In Ball Skills – To attempt to hit and pass a ball to a partner, to catch a large ball, to be able to hold a stick or bat currently and to work with a partner.
Children who do not meet age related expectations are given additional support from the adult with the group or from partnership with a more capable child.
Key Stage 1
All children have 2 weekly PE sessions from different key areas. In the second half of the summer term the children have one session, as well as a swimming lesson on a weekly basis.
The order of skills and knowledge
These follow the Foundation Subject blocks for each given area. The blocks can be taught in different orders and these normally link with the Chelmsford Schools Partnership’s competitions and which specialist teachers are available in each half term, but the lessons within each block will be taught in the same order to ensure that children are able to build on skills covered within that block.
How and when we assess
Assessment is made at the end of each block, using a POP task (proof of progress) that matches the assessment criteria set out in the blocks. Assessments are saved in a folder in Teams where they can be accessed by the subject leader 3 times a year.
By the end of the year we expect children in Year 1 to be able to:
- In Gymnastics – To move with awareness of space finding different ways to move, hold a balance and perform rolls and jumps safety
- In Dance – To remember a series of actions, to perform the actions in the correct time, to know the names of the moves taught and to perform artistically.
- In Athletics – To throw accurately, take off and land safely, to run with pace or speed depending on the distance.
- In Ball skills – To hit and pass the ball accurately, to work with other members of their team, to understand the rules of a game, to catch a ball accurately and be able to hold a bat or stick correctly. (This block will be used twice for two different ball games)
- In Swimming - To know the names of different strokes and perform the correct arm and leg technique for them, to maintain buoyancy when swimming, to put their face into the water when swimming and to enter and leave the water safely.
By the end of the year we expect children in Year 2 to be able to:
- In Gymnastics – To select the most appropriate skills and actions for a sequence, perform a sequence with a beginning, middle and an end, to identify ways to improve others performance, to know the different types of balances, stretches and rolls, to stay safe and perform a jump safely.
- In Dance – Use space safely and move with rhythm, perform dance actions with control, to remember and repeat a series of actions in a dance, to understand speed can control mood and that different moves are associated with different dances.
- In Athletics – To be able to zig zag through markers with speed and control, to throw overarm and jump higher and further, to choose a consistence pace when running, to understand that bending legs and body can change direction.
- In Ball/game skills – To be able to throw a small ball over arm, to hit a ball with a bat, to catch or stop a small ball, to use space and maintain position when playing a game, to understand the rules of a game, to understand there are different throwing and hitting actions and the actions for catching and stopping a ball.
- In Swimming – To go underwater safely holding breath, use the correct arm and leg actions for different strokes, to regain an upright position from back or front float, to enter and leave the pool safely, revise from Year 1 the names and actions of different strokes and for jumps into the water.
Children who do not meet ARE are given additional adult support and/or support by partner work with a more able child. Where appropriate, adapted resources will be provided.
